Wireless routers often operate at multiple speeds depending on several factors. If you are experience issues throughput performance issues when operating an application that is using the wi-fi connection. the first step is to determine the actual wi-fi connect speed to ensure that the TXP/IP connection between your PC and the radio hardware is not over subscribed.
NOTE: Wi-Fi is a half duplex network connection, so the maximum theoretical throughput that can be realized is one half the Speed value shown below.
Below are several procedures for determining your wi-fi connect speed for different version of Windows.
Windows 8.0/8.1
- Press the Windows key + D on your keyboard to show the Desktop.
- Right-click the wireless adapter icon located at the bottom-right corner of the Desktop screen, then click Open Network and Sharing Center.
- On the Network and Sharing Center, click the Wi-Fi connection.
The Wi-Fi Status window will appear showing your computer’s wireless connection details. The Speed section indicates the connection speed between the wireless adapter and the router. See below.
Windows Vista/Win 7
- Click on the Wireless icon on the task bar or at the bottom-right corner of your screen and select Open Network and Sharing Center.
- On the Network and Sharing Center window, click the Wireless Network Connection option.
The Wireless Network Connection Status window will appear showing your computer’s wireless connection details. The Speed section indicates the connection speed between the wireless adapter and the router.
